He’s in Maine! The last state on this long journey of his. Walker reports he had a butt-kickin’ day yesterday. He hiked fifteen miles and said it was his hardest day to date. He hiked through Mahoosuc Notch which many hikers consider the toughest mile on the AT. The boulders on this mile-long section of trail present obstacles that must be climbed over and sometimes under, creating a unique hiking experience. There are occasional ten-foot drops, and places where packs must be removed to squeeze beneath a boulder.
He has been tent sleeping near shelters, and slept at Speck Pond last night. Today he plans to stop in Andover to resupply.
Here are some photo of Mahoosuc Notch I found on the internet. I think these packs look much heavier than Walker’s. His lighter pack is certainly one of the reasons he’s able to zoom along. That, and the fact that he’s in really good shape. I think we’ll be Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sprat when he gets home. He’ll be trying to gain weight and I’ll be on my continual journey to lose it.
