About The Man in My Shoes

Since retiring in 2012 I am enjoying the freedom of being able to make my own decisions about how I spend my time and am taking advantage of the opportunities that I have to spend more time with my family, explore, learn, and pursue my dreams and goals. I look forward to writing about these pursuits and hope you enjoy reading about them.

    Hi Tim!

Congrats on the symbolic halfway! Bunny and I just completed our two day trial run from Mt Pleasant to the James River Footbridge, staying at the Punchbowl Shelter area.

The weather was fantastic, there were lots of friendly hikers, many of them “thru-hikers” and Bunny and I had a good and challenging trip. We even ran into Russell Trimmer, his friend, and sister Maya! The evening at the Punch Bowl shelter was busy, easily 15 people, and social and fun. I held up pretty well, though going down the steep stuff was challenging on the knees. I will never hike without poles again! It is like having four legs, and is key on the steep stuff. I am glad we went south. The hike from the James River up to Bluff Mountain would be quite a grind.

Since it looks like I can make it, we are now working out details of the bigger outing based on your suggested route.

Thanks for all your help and guidance! It was critical to being well-informed and well planned, and being able to focus on enjoying the hike. Our packs came in at about 25lbs each, so we were not too heavy.

    All the best,

    Dave
