This is Diane. She does not have a trail name but I think she should be called either Wonder Woman or The Good Wife. Diane’s husband is a thru-hiker named Molar Man (retired dentist). They are from Ohio and have an interesting arrangement. Diane is basically following Molar Man along the trail by car. She is able to use her Garmin to navigate to GPS points at which the AT crosses any type of road, even unpaved county roads and forest service roads.
Diane and Molar Man spend the night in inexpensive hotels or motels and each morning she drops him off of the trail. She then drives to the next place at which the AT crosses a road and waits for him. At the end Molar Man’s hiking day they go to a hotel and spend the night, then do it all over again the next day.
While she waits for Molar Man, Diane reads a lot of books, watches entire seasons of her favorite TV shows on a portable DVD player, and does trail magic. This morning as I walked up to the place where she was parked she got out of her car and offered me trail magic. She opened the back door of her Volvo station wagon and it was packed full of boxes of supplies. I enjoyed some Oreos and potato chips. It was too early for a soda so I passed on the opportunity to drink another Mountain Dew.
I wonder if the Princess would consider such an arrangement. She could get a lot of knitting done, catch up on Downton Abbey, read some good books, and do more trail magic of course. Let’s see what she says…
